Nice, wonder why she’s using curlers, and he’s got ringlets from a curling iron!
bit incongruous!
Can’t get used to the hairless face.
I agree, not liking the clean shaven face
And I do NOT like that last one….
Why do you dislike the last one in particular?
I don’t mean to be rude but I don’t like the way any part of him looks in this movie. The clothing is not only totally ugly and outdated, it doesn’t fit him. Then there’s the hair and the clean shaven face… awful! I don’t understand it either, in the original they didn’t have Diskette Moore dressed and looking like a fool. He’s normally so handsome why are they so desperately to make him look absolutely hideous?
Actually, that IS kind of rude to say that Russell with a bit shorter hair and a clean shaven face is “awful” – saying “I prefer him with facial hair” or whatever is fine, but “awful”? That’s pretty harsh on ol’ Russ to say that he isn’t the slightest bit attractive without a particular hair or facial hair style! I mean, say whatever you want, obviously, but I think it’s a bit extreme.
Plus, he can’t always look exactly the same. What do you think about actors/films in which the lead IS made to look deliberately awful because of the circumstances of the character? Gaining or losing significant amounts of weight, growing a heavy beard (on a normally clean shaven actor) – these are all common things actors do. Transformation is part of the job. He’s playing a drunk, rich playboy of a certain era, so it doesn’t seem crazy to me that he isn’t being styled to look exactly like “Russell Brand.”
Not to agree with the extreme points of view here, since I happen to think that Russell will look good in a fat suit, but these pictures kinda *worry* me, for several reasons. Number one, I think he MIGHT have gone past the “let’s slim down a bit” to “let’s get freakishly thin”… His normally healthy face now looks pretty emaciated. Also, it bothers me that he’s kinda frowning in every single one of them, when normally he is all cheery and smiley for the paparazzi. Makes me wonder if everything is going alright in his personal life. I don’t know, maybe I’m reading too hard into it, but these pictures are kinda worrying.
I tend not to pay much attention to candid pap shots because a) Russell has an extremely angular face (which granted is exacerbated by the weight drop), one misplaced light and he looks cadaverous–but it’s great for historical roles I think b) every paparazzi uses a slightly different lens which drastically affects the appearance of weight (I could swear everyone looks slimmer when Bauer-Griffin is the company) c) candid shots are a terrible gauge–Greta’s a gorgeous girl and even she looks tired, and there’s no context for what’s going on around them
I’m glad he changed his appearance for the film. I’m sure what you’ll see on screen will look much different. When he’s on a day off and back in his clothes and no makeup I think he looks more or less the same. The weight is troubling though yes. Even in Greek, (the scene with Rose at the start where she goes off the handle, which must have been shot late 2009 around November) he looks unhealthy–I think it was right for the scene though. Who knows, it could be for lots of reasons. I have similar bone structure to Russell’s and photos are a nightmare for me–they’re either really flattering or terrible. As for his personal life, I’ve seen a bit more of Katy (if this can be classified as personal) since my initial comments, and really, I guess I don’t get it. I hope that he’ll be successful in this path, but it’s a turn of events that’s made me anticipate that documentary and his standup even more since that’s the thing that interests me. I think those will be quite a while though since he’s got lots of films to do. He’s young. He’s multi-talented, but he’s only one man. And I do understand why he was obligated to pursue this direction at this time. I hope that he reaches a point where fame is not the goal and he realizes that he has the opportunity to produce really great work whether millions of people see it, or just the people who go seek it out. I think he’ll probably be making films for the next 30 years. He’s got lots of time.
You guys are, I believe, are just overly sensitive about these pictures. Who can just look at a picture of someone and tell what they are thinking or feeling? Obviously, these are just pictures of actors during a scene for a movie. (characters in film) Do you have any concept of Russell the actor? Does he, in the context of a story, always have to look the same? I love this side of Russell. He’s expanding his range of characters. if even just a wee bit. (shaving is not that drastic a change) The clothes he’s wearing are not his clothes. The clothes belong to the character, Arthur. Geez!
Plus, I love Russell in any form. I believe he’s just a handsome man, with or without the beard, with long or short hair. I frankly can’t wait for him to cut his hair short. He can’t carry that ‘long-haired guy’ character for too long. He’s 35. What’s he gonna do when he’s a 40 or 50 year old actor? ‘Transience is the universal law of change’ it’s inevitable.
Anyway he’ll be alright. He’s got perfect form. He’s 6′ 2″, he’s got a gorgeous face, perfect nose and soon he’ll be recognized as a great actor, if he keeps up the good work.
I like the last picture. He’s not smiling in the rest.
I must say Greta is gorgeous.
I guess I’m alone then in saying I think some of these pics are kind of adorable. I dig the shorter hair (though I do and always will have a thing for those long waves) and Russell without the beard presents a whole new character – or perhaps a blank slate, on which to build a character.
Plus also, his t-shirt? Guffaws.
I always thought Russell was beautiful and completely fine. I don’t even disagree that he can’t always look like himself in a movie, I guess for me the worst thing is the wardrobe. No one dresses like that and never has, its ugly. To have such a gorgeous man like Russell and then dress him up like that seems ashamed.
I actually like the no beard face, to me he looks younger, but dressed in those polyester, ill fitting thrift store duds… I just haven’t been able to get past it. I’m hoping when I see the movie I’ll understand what the purpose of all that was.
Starleigh, you know I love Russell… perhaps awful was too harsh.
People here need to learn the fact that saying “he looks rather on the thin side” or “he’s looking pretty serious there” does not equate to “OH GOD HE’S SO FUGLY” and start reacting accordingly…
I think everyone has made fair points here and there’s no need for aggressive tones or bickering. This blog is primarily meant to be just a news resource, not a discussion forum, and if people start arguing or being uncivil to each other, I will just not approve comments anymore. I’m directing this to everyone, not any specific person. Please keep comments relevant to the post at hand, don’t get personal toward anyone else, and don’t be disrespectful or overly negative toward other posters (or Russell). Thank you.
Can’t help but see “Working class hero” as a deliberate play on Travie Mccoys “Gym class Heros”.
I wonder if they’ve met…
Working Class Hero is a John Lennon song from 1970… about working class people being indoctrinated to become part of the middle class machine. I assumed that the character of Arthur is wearing it ironically because he’s a rich playboy. I don’t think that the costume dept. of the film would base Arthur’s wardrobe on a reference to Katy Perry’s ex.
(Also, I would guess that “Gym Class Heroes” is itself a play on the John Lennon song, but I’m just speculating as I don’t know anything about that band.)
