Weekend Box Office Results

Posted in films on June 7th, 2010 by starleigh

Get Him to the Greek debuted at #2 in the box office in its opening weekend, with a very respectable $17.4 million gross.

Moreover, if you look at the chart above, it actually had the highest per-screen average of all movies in the top 10.  Shrek Forever After made more money, but it also played on almost twice as many screens as Greek.

It’ll be interesting to see how Greek fares over a longer period of time – I predict it’ll eventually surpass Forgetting Sarah Marshall‘s box office figures.

You Talkin’ To Me?

Posted in films, interview on February 17th, 2010 by starleigh

In 2008, Total Film presented Russell with some of the most famous lines in movie history, and asked for his reaction to each of them.

Here are his replies.

You talkin’ to me? (Taxi Driver)

Everyone does that in front of the mirror, don’t they? I like to do it campily: “Ooooo, you talking to me? Well there’s not anyone else in here.”  It’s just a brilliant moment in cinema because all of us have practised things we’d like to say in a fight then loathed ourselves for not saying them when it happens.  But what’s the alternative? To go on a killing spree and rescue a child prostitute? That’s no kind of life.

Do you feel lucky, punk? (Dirty Harry)

I do feel like a lucky punk.  I suppose I’m the anti-Clint in many ways. I do feel like a punk and I do feel lucky.  Do I feel more lucky or talented? I’m not defined by luck — that’s not my life story.  “What a lucky guy’s tale — heroin addiction and despair!”  No, my life is defined by talent.

Play it again, Sam. (Casablanca)

Play it as many times as you like, but I’m not coming.  I’ve never actually seen it.  I’d like to, but I’m always frightened that it’s a medicinal film, like “Come on, watch Casablanca, it’s good for you.”  Perhaps it’s a hangover from childhood.  I only watched The Sound of Music for the first time about two weeks ago.  It’s fucking brilliant, isn’t it?
